Washington Township Firemen's Relief Association

The Washington Township Firemen’s Relief Association is a local organization that administers funds collected by the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association. The State Association collects a 2% levy on all fire insurance premiums written by insurance companies chartered outside the State of New Jersey. The purpose of the funds collected by the State Association is to provide burial benefits for qualified Firefighters.

Membership in the Association:
Membership into the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association and the Washington Township Firemen’s Relief Association is not automatic. The New Jersey State Firemen’s Association requires that members be between the ages of 18 and 45 and pass a physical examination. This physical is conducted in conjunction with the entrance physical provided to each probationary Firefighter of the Washington Township Fire Department. Upon completion of the physical exam, the secretary of the local association submits the application for membership to the State Association for review. Once approved for membership, Firefighters must maintain a combined average of 60% of yearly fires and drills to be considered active in the association.
Burial Benefits

The State Association also provides burial benefits to certain survivors of firefighters. These survivors include:

  • Widow or Widower
  • Children
  • Father and/or Mother

Benefits are prorated as follows until a firefighter has completed 7 active years (84 months) in the State and local associations:

Under 1 year   $6,000.00
1 year, but under 2 years   $6,400.00
2 years, but under 3 years   $6,500.00
3 years, but under 4 years   $6,600.00
4 years, but under 5 years   $6,700.00
5 years, but under 6 years   $6,800.00
6 years, but under 7 years   $6,900.00
7 years, and over   $9,300.00

Note: This scale of payments was effective as of July 1, 2008 and is subject to change by the New Jersey State Firemen's Association Executive Committee.

Should death occur in the line of duty the maximum benefit will be tripled.
The secretary of Washington Township Firemen’s Relief Association should be notified immediately upon the death of a Firefighter to ensure that a Notice of Death Form is filed with the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association.

Relief
The Washington Township Firemen’s Relief Association is allowed to approve and award monetary relief to qualified Firefighters of the association. If a Firefighter is in need of monetary relief, he or she should contact the secretary of the local association to obtain the necessary forms. All forms will be reviewed and approved by both the Board of Trustees and Board of Representatives of the Washington Township Firemen’s Relief Association.

All meetings will be held at the Fire District Auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Gloucester County Caucus will be held at the Whitman Square Fire Company Johnson Road Station on Thursday August 21, 2008 at 7:30 pm. The New Jersey State Firemen's Convention wil be held on September 12 & 13 2008 in Wildwood.
